"Dearest donkeys, why is it that your ears are so large?"
"Why, the better to hear you, dearest Mom!"
I swear... each morning as soon as we open the garage door, the donkeys begin to bray. (Apologies to our neighbors... they are very, very loud!)
Yesterday while at the barn for afternoon chores, I happened to open the refrigerator and grab a carrot. Breaking them in tiny pieces, I fed a few to Moonie and Red who were right by the barn. The donkeys were at the opposite end of the dry lot. I swear they heard the refrigerator door open, because... by the time I walked out of the workshop (where the fridge is) and entered the stall aisle, there was a donkey peering longingly into the first stall.
Of course, if I give treats to the horses, I also give some to the donkeys. I walked out into the lower end of the dry lot (away from the horses) so that I could give some treats to the donkey girls without horses interfering.
One for Chloe...
Two for Daphne...
Two for Chloe...
"Sorry Chloe, that was the last one."
Meanwhile, back in the barn... a visitor. The barn is not terribly close to the chicken houses. Only the most adventurous chickens end up visiting the barn.
My only "helper," yesterday afternoon, was Chester.
Forrest had stayed at the house to keep an eye on the window washers who came for their annual pre-holiday visit. And Annie rarely goes out for afternoon chores as it's right in the middle of her nap time.
Chester is a cat whisperer. The cats rub all over him - while he plays it cool, ignoring their presence.
The most curious thing about yesterday happened while we were taking our daily walk in the woods.
Right next to our platform tent, in the middle of the woods, was a fresh cow patty on the ground! Apparently there was another cow loose in the woods!
I have to say... that is one of the best things about life in the country. One never knows what curious happenings will highlight any given day!
