Western Adventure, Day One

Hello from Utah!!  Well, after getting up at 2:30 AM to get to the airport, followed by several hours of travel (only a one-hour delay on the plane in Charlotte, NC), we arrived in sunny Las Vegas.  We grabbed a rental car and hit the road out of town up into the mountains towards Utah.  The drive through the dessert was spectacular, but nothing compared to the vistas we encountered when we arrived at Zion National Park.   It was absolutely magnificent!

We took a hike back the canyon along a river... towering red sandstone giants on both sides of us.

We felt an energy flowing from these mountains - which have been shaped over millennia by water, wind, and sun -  a feeling like they were alive.

Layers upon layers of sandstone in shades of white, orange, and red.

It's difficult to convey the enormity of these rocky giants in a photograph.

Compared to home, this felt otherworldly... as though we were on a different planet.

We found the locals to be quite friendly.

This fellow was quite enamored with Jack.

And very photogenic!

Our accommodations for the night were at the Zion Mountain Ranch - seen pictured here behind the herd of bison.

Our first and only meal of the day (don't worry, I had packed snacks for the trip) was here in their farm-to-table restaurant.  Outside the restaurant window were a couple grazing pigs, some free-ranging chickens, and miniature horses - it kind of felt like home!!

It was a wonderful first day - we packed a whole lot in and settled into bed completely exhausted.

Meanwhile, back at home, the farm is in great hands!!

Thank you to everyone at home who fills in while we are gone!!
