Getting Cozy With Autumn

There's something wonderful about Autumn!

To me, it's the time of year when I concentrate more on homey things...
logs on the fire, soup in the kettle, wool on the needles, etc.
It's my favorite time of year for indoor activities...
Spring, of course, is my favorite for outdoor activities.
Winter... not bad at all.
Summer....meh!
(If we could take away the proliferation of flying insects who love to invade my personal space and the intense humid heat... it would rank equal to winter.)
That about sums up the seasons for me.

Meanwhile, here on the farm... everything remains strangely green...
except for that which perished at the hand of this past weeks' killing frosts.

And though the foliage is wilted, the purple beauty berries are spectacular in the afternoon sun.

Bright sunny days with cold crisp winds have helped to keep the midges (gnats) away...

a welcomed relief for everyone... two legged and four!

It seems we all have a little something to crow about these days!

Our newest crazy chickens have begun to lay.
Each day we get a lovely assortment of colorful eggs...

This year, I have not used a light to extend their daylight hours.
We are only getting 10 to 12 eggs daily...
and that is plenty for us and our family.

During the coldest part of winter, I will heat their coops with a heat lamp...
but for now, everyone seems to be enjoying the colder temps.

This past weekend flew by.

I had planned on taking some time "off" and not doing any work, but somehow...
that didn't happen. (my own doing)
We did our final mowing (yay!).
I dug up all of the summer bulbs and put them in the greenhouse to dry out.
I will pack them away in boxes for next year.

We went to Tyler's Saturday morning soccer game,
and kept the "littles" on Saturday night while their parents went out to dinner.

Sunday, on the day that I had decided to take "off"...
I tackled housecleaning the kitchen...
emptying the cabinets, washing the shelves and re-arranging the cabinets...
then did the same in the pantry...

washing the shelves and re-organizing the contents.
All of our "dry" items are kept in glass jars...
which needed to be washed and re-filled.

You may think me weird... but I like doing these tasks...
but, seriously... only in the Autumn.
The satisfaction of completing that task is like a cozy sweater around my shoulders.
I love my home... and I love keeping it organized.
Now I am ready for winter cooking and baking...
and enjoying all things "pumpkin!"

I started this witch's hat for Halloween.
she specializes in enchanted projects... check out her patterns.

(Photo from Tiny Owl Knits)
This hat is knit in wool, extra big...
then tossed into the washer and dryer in order to felt it.
I'll show you the finished version...as soon as it's done.

You are truly amazing - While I've got a similar homestead, my organizational skills are not quite what yours are! The hat is a charmer! I look forward to seeing what you create.

My comments haven't been posting but I'm still here everyday :) I am with you on all the seasons. We are supposed to get a measureable amount of snow this week. I felt mittens so I will be excited to see how your hat turns out. Have a great week.

those eggs are wonderful! i just made a run for eggs yesterday. i can't get enough of them. we went from horrible hot weather to winter weather with no fall in sight...no color changes either. we are still green here.

My favorite season is fall too. Winter is okay and I like the colors of spring and Easter. But summer is my least favorite. I hate the really hot and humid weather and the bugs. Yech. But I do like the fresh tomatoes, peppers and the other things from the garden. Love the crowing roosters. Would love to wake up to that.

I totally agree with you about the seasons. It is so nice right now with no bugs.. It is just beautiful out there and nice to be outside. Your witches hat is adorable. Now all you have to do is find a witch to wear it! Have a happy day.
