Wisdom From The Little Prince

I read a quote on one of my favorite blogs yesterday
that really struck a chord with me.
It's something that I have felt with all of my heart...
but have never put into words so perfectly.
(I will give you more info about this blog later in this post.)

The quote is this:

"You become responsible forever for what you have tamed."

and it is from the book The Little Prince.

There are so many souls who call this farm "home"
and I feel responsible for the welfare and lives of each and every one of them.

And although many have entered the retirement phase of their lives...
they are just as precious and important as when they were earning their keep.

There is a place here for them for as long as they live
and I will spend my days taking care of them...
for as long as I live.

Each being, be it feathered or fluffed or furred, is family to me.
They have filled my days with joy
and kept me from getting lazy!

More will come, I am sure...
and many will pass on.

The rest of us?
Well, we will just grow old together.

If you have time, check out My Shetland.
Frances writes an almost daily blog about her ponies and their life in Shetland,
the northern most outpost of the United Kingdom.
You may have seen a few of her ponies in this picture...

  1. Beautifully put, by yourself and the lady who wrote that very true quote. I often think animals are the best things we have on this crazy planet of ours. My chickens and cats are true family members and I love each and every one of them (past and present). I have had many heartaches losing animals (and there will be many more to come), but I couldn't live without them in my life. The joy, love and loyalty they give us is priceless and, to me, makes life worth living. I am definitely going to check out 'My Shetland' - looks like a great blog. I have always wanted to visit Shetland, so this will give me a glimpse into life there. Very best regards.

  2. what a great quote and yes I feel this way, even my wild birds depend on me! You are such a inspiration!!

  3. That is exactly how I feel about our all of our fur children. I get so angry at people who get rid of older dogs, horses or cats. It infuriates me.

A woman I worked with gave her very old Pomeranian to a complete stranger in the parking lot of Walmart. I wanted to slap her.

A woman who I knew in the horse show association sent several of her old horses to the killers. Because they were not useful any longer. She was not using them for lessons or renting them out to parents for their kids to ride. Very sickening. I don't speak to her any longer either.

You are a woman after my own heart.

Merry Christmas to all of you and yours.

  4. You give all your birds and animals such a good life. It warms my heart.

  5. I don't know what I would do without my fur babies. They are precious and like you, what keep me going at times. You can check out my critters on IG, deenapoteet. Thank you for letting us get a glimpse of your happy, cozy world!

  6. I feel the same way. My animals are my friends. That IS their purpose and my purpose is to give them the best life possible. They do not provide us with any food other than the eggs I collect from the ducks and hens. Even those, I share with all the critters that live here, with a penchant for scrambled, sunny-side up or over-easy. Many wonder why I have goats that I've never put to work for milk and goat cheese; the reason is simple.... I just like goats and want them to be part of my family. We have aging cats, and my most comforting thought is that they will be cared for until their dying day. Pets are a huge responsibility, just like children, and they are worth it.

  7. Wonderful quote..I couldn't agree more..It's a shame that there are those who ignore their responsibility when it comes to caring for their animals..makes me sad..and mad. Animals give back so much more than they ask..Worth every minute of our time.Lovely post.

  8. I always love your posts and photos. And I sure did enjoy the visit with the Shetlands, that was quite a ride!

  9. I agree,,, they are Precious and they bring such joy to our lives... How wonderful are lives are with them in it!
