Uncommonly Common

Yesterday was just one of those days.  I was overcome by events and ran out of time to write a typical blog.  I did, however want to share a few things with you... like, this photo of a Common Grackle.  Most likely if you life in the US, you are accustomed to this bird.  I find it funny that its name has the word common in it.  Funny, because if you look closely at this bird, it is quite remarkable - his iridescent blue head, and purplish shoulders... not to mention those pale yellow eyes.  Quite uncommon indeed!

I suppose its "common" nomenclature comes from the fact that they used to be found in great abundance.  Their numbers have dwindled over the years to the point that they are on the "almost endangered" list.

It is not often that we get one at our bird feeders, so I grabbed the opportunity to photograph this one.  He has a sunflower seed in his beak and a little suet at the end.  Happy to serve you, Mr. Grackle.

I also wanted to share this photo... one of my favorite scenes in all the world.  Blue sky, brilliant green grass, leaves emerging, old log cabin in the background and the peaceful grazing of multiple species together... horse, pony, pig, sheep sharing a moment... making this the perfect pastoral scene.  All that is missing is the morning symphony of birdsong that is the soundtrack to every morning these days.

No matter what is happening in the world, it serves to me a reminder... life is good!

I can't end this short blog without sharing the fleeting beauty of the crabapple trees that line our upper
lane.  It's another scene I look forward to each spring.  What you cannot see behind these trees is our blueberry orchard... full of blossoms - hopefully the sign of a great harvest!

We'll return tomorrow with a little more effort!

We used to have Grackles come to our place in droves and boy were they loud. There would be at least a hundred of them at one time. Only at a certain time of year though.

We don't see them here at the new place, different state maybe that is why. They are really beautiful birds.

Love the crabapple blossoms. So pretty in Spring.

When I was in college we were plagued with grackles on campus. The university tried many things to chase them away: nets; predator decoys; recordings and so on. Nothing worked. They are very smart birds. Years ago I saw one pick up a tortilla chip from the ground at a restaurant we were dining at. The bird proceeded to take that chip over to the nearby bubbling fountain and dip the chip in the water until it became softer to eat!
