Polite Mr. Roo

We've had our share of rooster troubles over the years.  If you've visited us for some time, you might remember Hank, the attack rooster.

Of course we cannot forget our band of white fraternity brothers from Alpha Delta Roo who terrorized the farm and battled each other to the bloody end.

Not all of our roosters have given us grief.  In fact, over the years we have had many gentle roosters.  One of our favorites was Rod Stewart (pictured below).

One trait that all of our roosters shared is their amorous behavior with the ladies.  So much so, that I had concluded that "love" was the only thing on these roosters' minds.  That is until we got our current rooster,  Elwood.

Elwood is the gentlest rooster we have ever had.  He tends to his flock, making sure they are safe, secure, and well-fed.  In the mornings, when they head into the grass to look for insects, he often finds worms and tosses them to his girls for treats.

The funny thing is... he expects nothing in return.

I rarely even see him attempt to mount one of his hens.

A polite, un-demanding rooster makes for a very happy flock of hens.

Last time Maggie visited the farm, she took a dozen eggs home with her to place in their incubator.   Three weeks later.... no viable eggs.  It seems the only downside to having a polite rooster... is the inability to grow new chicks!

I wish I could say the same about our rooster. He is generous with treats, and rarely eats before the ladies, but he is a sex maniac! We won't be replacing him when he leaves us. What a gentleman your Elwood is.

Hahahaha! We have a gentle Silkie rooster that lives his best life with 3 young hens. I love watching how he manages them. I’ve only ever seen him mate once, but when I use our eggs, I can see they’ve been fertilized! Our hens are Black Stars/Sex Link so they don’t get broody.
Still laughing about the story of your “ninnies” the other day. Love to Pete.
