Today is the end of my 66th trip around the sun and the beginning of my 67th - and what a ride it has been! My farm family celebrated my birthday last Sunday with a surprise birthday party for me. And seriously, this was the first time in my life that I was completely surprised. Life is good - my heart is full. I have a loving family, wonderful friends, and a life partner who tries always to fulfill my dreams. I could ask for nothing more in life.
As you read this, we are driving 8 hours to visit our newest granddaughter and sister to our "Carolina" Wren. Clara is almost a month old - so we are quite excited to finally meet her. As for the farm - it will be well cared for in our absence... with a small army (it takes a village!). We'll be back on Monday to share our weekend with you. Have a lovely weekend, yourself.

PS: The weed of which I spoke yesterday is Mugwort. It has no redeeming qualities (although it is sometimes used medicinally - but not by me) - and it is a doozy to kill. It is highly invasive because it spreads with tubers beneath the soil. So, not only do you have to eradicate the stems and roots, but also those large nasty tubers. From what I have read, the only way to get rid of it is to use Round-Up to kill it. Just digging it out alone does not eradicate it if there is even one tuber left in the ground it will spread like wildfire again. I hate using Round up... but I believe we have no choice. This particular perennial bed is far away from our kitchen garden. We will also have to sacrifice the perennials that live in this garden. Although, in all honesty, they are scant because the mugwort has choked them out over the years. Wish us luck. Next year I will start this garden all over from scratch.

We got hay from the hubbies cousin one year and after putting it into the manure pile we ended up with the worst weed. It became known as the weed from Hell. Briars, thousands of see heads and it got 3 or 4 feet tall.
In order to get rid of them (which took at least 5 years), I had to meticously pull them and put them into garbage bags before they could propogate.
Happy birthday and good luck!
