You may have noticed that Maven Haven sits at the edge of our apple orchard.
It's the very coldest spot on the farm... its own little micro-climate. Amazingly, Spring arrives about two weeks later in this particular spot than it does elsewhere on the farm.
The daffodils in the front pasture have been blossoming for weeks, but, here in the apple orchard, they are just opening.
It's wonderful to see that all of the planting work that I did last summer is coming back again this year.
I will be adding a few more specimens to this garden in the next week... hoping that something will be blooming every day until the next snowfall (hopefully not for many, many months, though!)
Everywhere I look there are happy little flower faces greeting me!
The chickens are all a flutter right now. Their world has turned upside-down - or so they'd have you believe. Because our flock is small in size right now, we have decided to close off the upper chicken house and use it for new chicks. The hens will have to roost in the lower house for the time being.
Today we will be picking up some chicks (hopefully all females) from the feed store. Until they are large enough to move in with the larger hens, they will live in this house. As they grow and are able to go outside, the present chicken yard can easily accommodate this. There is a large net that can be dropped down to the ground, dividing the yard into two parts. This way, young and old will get accustomed to each other before actually mixing.
It's always an adventure bringing a new flock home to the farm...watching them grow into proper young ladies (and hopefully no improper gentlemen!) I'll share photos of the new chicklets tomorrow.
Lastly, I snapped this photo of O'Malley yesterday morning. To me it looked as if she were standing at the gate hoping to escape. In reality, she was just there munching on some long, green grass.

Our apple blossoms are falling now and our daffodils are done. The lilacs are blooming here now and the wisteria is filling our woods with purple. The tulip magnolia is losing its pretty blooms and sending out it's green leaves and just now our blooming cherry trees are awash in pink. The wind is taking those blooms and making our lane a sea of pink.
Don't you just love the new life Spring brings? We have a pair of bluebirds moved into the house outside the kitchen window. Love watching them in the mornings.
Hope the chicks are all baby girls. But...
Mary
We are making another one to put by our gate at the road. I think that it will turn heads as folks are speeding.....er....driving by.

My new chicks are a month old now, amazing how fast they grow. They, too, are separated from the big girls until they are the same size. You have the best set up for that - ours is hodgepodge.
