Looking Ahead...Blueberries, Looking Back....Haiti

Beautiful weather this weekend enabled us to get a lot of outdoor 
projects completed.  
One of these was to place bird netting over all of our 106 blueberry 
bushes and the strawberry patch.

Our 100 young blueberry bushes are loaded with fruit this year. 

This will be the first summer for a significant harvest
from these bushes.  
In the past, our 6 older bushes have had tremendous yield. 
Two summers ago I was able to preserve 200 jars of blueberry lime
jam from these bushes.
Here is my help for the project.
Jenn with baby on board and Oakely.
Obviously, Oakley is not much help.
He's only there to offer moral support.
Ok, what happened to the help?

Thanks to you and "Hubbs" and the medical professionals that generously donated time and care to those suffering in Haiti. You are amazing! So sad to see so many injured people desperately needing help.

You have 106 blueberry bushes? Wow, that is a lot of blueberries. How long did you have them before they started producing? We planted a few bushes three years ago, but they were bare root and have never even bloomed. :-( Somebody told me it might take up to 7 years before they really produce, so I guess we just have to be patient.

Yes, we have 106 bushes. The 100 new bushes were bare root and we planted them three years ago. This is the first summer that they have really produced. We test our soil and add ammonium to it in the fall to keep the pH down. Blueberries like acidic soil.

My son would be so jealous of all of your 106 blueberry bushes. This year is the first year for us to have blueberry bushes. We have 4, and have reaped some of the benefits of the scrupulous berries. But 106....WOW!

Oh what I would give for 106 blue berry bushes...we are so lucky that my aunt from upper state New York brings us tons and tons of freshly picked (frozen fresh) to us each year when she comes out for her Arizona stay...
