Autumn Meanderings

Happy November!! Please tell me... where did October go? Is it me, or is there something magical about Autumn sunrises? At this time of year, I love getting out of bed while it is still dark and heading out into the pre-dawn morning in time to see the fiery glow of the horizon as I work around the barnyard. There's something about the warm hues cast by the rising sun on a clear morning, and the pastel hues seen on a cloudy morning that I find so inspiring. Every morning, there is a new gift to unwrap... and every morning, it's a surprise! With the Earth's axis now tilted away from the sun (in our hemisphere), the sun rises at a more southeasterly point, casting longer shadows and emphasizing textures. The fiery glow makes for a more dramatic golden hour at this time of year. All of this combines to evoke a feeling of awe... a pretty wonderful way to begin any day! We've enjoyed a beautiful week, here on the farm, with temperatures rising by the day. ...

Garden Harvest, and The Day We Lost Forrest

All of the planning, preparing, planting, watering, weeding, etc. is paying off (as it always does!)... in harvests of farm-fresh, organic produce. No carbon footprint in transportation... just good ole' Victory Garden style, homegrown food. Real food - everything on this breakfast plate was grown on the farm. We've been busy harvesting red and yellow onions, carrots, and two types of potatoes. After a little time drying on the dining room table, the potatoes are stored for later use in our cool, dry, basement pantry. The onions are now bundled and hanging in the cool, dark to dry. And the garlic that hangs in the back, dark portion of the barn is almost dry. We are currently harvesting cucumbers, and summer squashes. Tomatoes are starting to ripen. Peppers will be soon to follow. Beans will also come a little later. Winter squashes will be ready for harvest in the autumn. Later in the summer, we'll dig the sweet potatoes. For now, ...

As We Approach Summer Solstice

How is it that we find ourselves in the middle of June, headed down the home stretch towards the longest day of the year? We are also headed into the hottest week of the year thus far. This gal is not a fan of the heat (and neither am I if truth were told!) Fly masks are a must these days. And believe it or not (if you've been on this journey with us for a while you will understand what I am saying).... Chloe actually let me put a fly mask on her yesterday. Wonders never cease! Mornings are still relatively cool and remain everyone's active time. Both Faith and Ginger can be found out in the pasture at this time of day. When they see me at the barn, they come over to beg for their breakfast. Forrest assumes they are there to play with him. Faith says, emphatically, that they are not - she stamps her feet and gives Forrest a little head butt. This week, finally, is liberation week for the birds.
