They Grow Up Too Quickly, Don't They!

Yesterday, Mother's Day, as I was working around the farm, I thought about motherhood and what an incredible experience it has been.  Looking at my chicks and realizing that two weeks ago, they were fluffy, downy hatchlings...

that have very quickly grown and matured.  While still children, they are no longer babies and are quite capable.

It's like that, isn't it?  One minute your children are learning to walk and the next minute they are grown with children of their own.  My children and my grandchildren are precious to me and bring me so much joy.   Thanks to all of them, I had a lovely Mother's Day weekend.

Saturday evening, my son cooked dinner for me and I spent the evening with my three littlest.

On Sunday, my daughter and Tyler came to visit.  Tyler - like the chicks - though still a child, is so grown up and independent.  (And yes, I believe he has my chin!)

It seems like just yesterday he was toddling around the farm!

Amazingly, one of those turkeys in the background, above, is Old Tom.  In this photo, the turkeys were two years old (Chuck and Edith were hatched at the same time as Tom, but Tom has outlived them both.)

We had a rain-filled weekend on the farm, and temperatures were unseasonably chilly.  Luckily, though, we have had no frosts, so everything previously planted is doing well.  By Thursday of this week, the cold spell should end and then I will be planting until the cows come home!

We had a lot of activity at the bird feeders this weekend.  Our Baltimore orioles have returned to the farm.  We have at least two pairs that are here each summer to nest.  Their happy song is something I look forward to each summer as they serenade me while I work in the gardens.  Like clockwork, every spring, the hummingbirds arrive right around May 1st - followed by the orioles later that week.  Both are joyful sightings!

Our yearly calendar is marked by such events... the comings and goings of our winged friends, the blossoming of a myriad of wildflowers, the first and last frosts, the colorful change of seasons as the sun rises and sets each day.  This world that we live in and all of its beauty makes life so magical.

All of this, combined with the joy of family and friends makes for a bountiful life.  For all of this I am truly grateful!

Yesterday I awoke with a brainstorm.  I had been keeping all of my dry painting brushes in a glass jar - which makes it a little hard to tell which brush is which when I go to get a specific one.  So, I thought that a block of wood with holes just the right size for each brush would be a good way to stay organized.  Luckily, we had a piece of wooden beam in our scrap lumber pile; so, Hubbs helped me make this brush organizer:

It is cut on an angle so that I can see each of the brushes.  I have to say... I quite like it.  And best of all, it was free!

I love your brush holder..... Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. I got such a gift for Mother's Day from my son-in-law. He made me a patio fire pit out of an old washing machine drum.
We have so much to be thankful for everyday. We seem to be about 2 weeks behind you, here in norther Maine. We should have the hummingbirds today, fingers crossed.
Is the cardigan you have on in the picture with Tyler a newly made one?

The cardigan that I am wearing is a very very old one. It’s always been a favorite of mine and I pull it out every spring

Good idea with the paint brush holder.
Do you have a separate room:where your paint
things are set up? Or, do you have to “set up”
a place each time you paint. I have a room that
could be my “paint room” but the light is the best
in the kitchen so I “set up” each time I paint.
I do have space in my kitchen where I have
my brushes, paints, papers etc.

How true it is, our children, grandchildren and for me,
great grandchildren grow up so fast. Just like your chicks!
Happy you enjoyed your Mother’s Day weekend!

Tyler was born when I first started Irish Garden House.
Unbelievable!
