Like life, our weekend was a mix of happy and sad,
ups and downs.
We said goodbye to ole Smilin' Jill on Friday.
We were prepared, though, as she had had a rather rapid decline.
But, at 18 years of age, she had lived a good life here on the farm.
She was a quiet, gentle goat... the leader of the herd.
Soft-spoken and gentle, she made it her business to keep peace in the goat yard...
often gently placing herself in the middle of conflict.
It was her way of breaking up fights.
The other goats respected her.
She'll be missed.
Saturday, we celebrated Tyler's 8th birthday.
Jenn and her fiance, Cory, planned the best birthday party with lots of
good food and water play for the kids.
Any day spent with these three munchkins is the best kind of day!
We lost one of our baby mallard ducklings this weekend.
Thankfully, the rest are all growing bigger and stronger with each passing day.
The larger ducklings are all doing great.
I opened the stall door yesterday to give them a peak out into the big world
beyond their stall.
It is soon time for them to venture out... so yesterday was their first peak.
And... it was a scary one!
Speaking from experience, it just takes a little time.
The chicks are now adolescents and have been granted access to their yard.
They spend their days running in and out of their house.
At night, as the sun sets, they all return to the house to roost on the roosting rod.
Oh my... little ones grow up so very quickly!
In my spare time, I've been gardening.
The asparagus patch had disappeared beneath a heavy blanket of weeds.
Yikes!
I weeded it.
I mulched it.
Now it is exactly as it should be.
I've been adding to the perennial garden as well.
All of the happy colors are starting to pop.
Making me smile and...
attracting hummingbirds and butterflies...
and kitties, as well!
And last, but not least, I saved this little bun from certain death three times this weekend...
snatching her from the mouths of Chester (twice) and Sam.
Luckily she was only slimy, not hurt. I placed her back in her nest.
This photo is the following day... she was out hopping around in the garden.
The garden gate is now closed and locked to all dogs.
Tell me... am I crazy for saving a baby bunny who is going to grow up and eat my garden?
I don't think so.
There's plenty to go around.
