The horses were quite late in going out to pasture yesterday.
And every chance they had, they let me know it.
The power company had sent tree trimmers to trim the trees in our front pasture
away from power lines.
Each whinny and bray let me know that the equines were losing patience with the tree trimmers.
The funny thing is...
you'd think they would run out of the gate as soon as I opened it.
Nope.
As soon as they reached the grass they all just stopped....
and started eating.
Gradually they made their way (ate their way) a little further into the pasture.
I had thought that perhaps they would kick up their heels with joy
at having the gate opened.
They had other things on their mind!
I received a questions regarding our two ponies.
It was pointed out to me that we rarely have any stories about our
two sweet bay ponies, Donnie Branco and Scarlet.
So... I thought I would tell you a little about their history today.
Scarlet and Donnie are brother and sister
(one of their other sisters is Shirley... Dr. Becky's pony who looks just like these two!)
Donnie joined the farm crew in 2007,
while Scarlet came to us in 2010.
They were given to us by a friend (Nancy) and colleague of Dr. Becky who
at one time taught Equine Studies at PSU.
Donnie and Scarlet are descendants of a herd of ponies who were used for behavioral studies.
When Nancy left PSU for another job, her ponies left with her...
and we were lucky enough to be the recipients of these two sweet ponies.
These two generic ponies have always been a wonderful addition to the farm.
Donnie is so very easy going and makes a good riding pony for tiny tots.
Scarlet...well, she makes a good boss....her nickname "bossy pants" is well deserved!
She keeps the rest of the equines in line most of the time.
