Herding Turkeys

As if we needed a new task to add to the end of each day....
we seem to have acquired one....
herding turkeys!

We decided over the weekend,
that it is time for the turkeys to free range a bit.
We have been reluctant to allow them to leave their yard
out of fear that we would never get them back in at night.

So, each evening, before dark,
we find them and herd them back to safety.
Last night Tom and Chuck were cavorting with the chickens in the chicken pen.
Meanwhile, Edith was nibbling grass near the turkey pen.

With the help of Amanda and Sam

we herded the two male turkeys out of the chicken pen...

Sam is a great farm dog,
and loves to work.
He is respectful of the birds,
and they have no fear of him.

Free ranging turkeys is not turning out as we had planned.
It seems that turkeys are much like guineas and less like chickens.
That is....the are a little short in the brain department.

I thought I would share a few pictures of our Easter fun with you.
Our Easter treat for Tyler is this new farm wagon...

which he loved riding in.
Almost as much as his Mommy loved it!

Especially when his Uncle Andy took them for a ride...

It was a wonderful family day...
and we got a short break from the rain, too!

  2. My grandfather had a Turkey farm and I remember him saying that turkeys are not the brightest birds around. Love Tyler's farm wagon, green like a John Deere tractor!!

  5. Looks like the perfect day with family.
Can't help you with the turkeys. I wish I had some, but I don't. I hope you're able to come up with a reasonable solution for everybody. :)

  10. Such cute photo's of Tyler and the wagon :)
My neighbor once said her guineas made the chickens seem like rocket scientists. So much for turkeys I guess. We'll be sticking to chicken keeping !

  12. I can only imagine how fun it is to herd those turkeys. I used to herd the geese, but they weren't too bad. Most days I could do it on my own. Occasionally, however, their power steering would go out. Then it was a job. It certainly looks like you had a lot of fun on Easter.

  14. We had turkeys once and they are a little contrary in the learning department. We just have chickens now and we have two hens that fly out of the pen everyday to lay eggs in the dog house. I have to herd them back in at supper time and collect their eggs. But I love the farm life. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

  15. Good Morning Bev,
Your turkeys are beautiful! We've never tried raising turkeys on our farm but it's something we may try one day along with Guineas. I love the photo's of you Grandson's new 'wheels'...we used to have one similar but it was red. Looks as though Tyler's will be enjoyed by more than just him LOL! Have a wonderful day.
    Maura :)
