Bluebirds Abound!

A few weeks ago, Jack hung an additional 10 bluebird boxes around the pastures. Eastern bluebird numbers decreased during the 60's and 70's, but bluebird box campaigns have helped to increase their numbers once again. That is quite evident around the farm. We are privileged to constantly hear their melodic "cheer cheerful charmer" song while working around the farm. We have spotted a number of them showing obvious interest in the new nesting boxes.
This male bluebird will try to attract his mate to the box by going in and out of the hole and flapping his wings. After that his work is done...and the female will build the nest and lay the eggs. Bluebirds raise more than one family each summer.....so we should be seeing plenty more in the near future.

What a pretty little bird, and how lovely that they're living on your farm. The nest box looks quite low down, is it? Do they not need to be higher?

I'm really coveting those overalls now I know they are quilted :)

I thought we had bluebirds moving into our box, but lately I've been seeing chickadees! Wishing you and your family a happy Easter.

I remember when the bluebird numbers were decreasing. I'm so glad to see them making a come back. While I was in Florida visiting my mom she had a nesting pair. The male would come out and actually have a conversation with me. Maybe that part was in my head. Hmmmm......

I love the bluebirds. They love the wide open areas so I may not have too many at the cabin. I'll just enjoy yours. :0)
